How to Password-Protect Any File for Free

Encrypt File works on any file type, a photo, a spreadsheet, a zip, anything, locking it with a password using the same AES-256 encryption behind Encrypt Text, so you can share it over email, chat, or cloud storage without the contents being readable to anyone who intercepts it.

  1. 1Open the Encrypt File tool.
  2. 2Choose the file you want to protect, or drop it in.
  3. 3Enter a password, or click the dice icon to generate a strong random one.
  4. 4Click "Encrypt & Download" to save the encrypted file.
  5. 5Send the encrypted file to the recipient, and share the password separately, through a different channel, for the strongest protection.

Frequently asked questions

What file types can I encrypt?

Any file. The tool encrypts the raw bytes of whatever you upload, so it works the same whether it's a document, an image, an archive, or anything else.

How does the recipient open the encrypted file?

They use the Decrypt File tool, uploading the encrypted (.enc) file and entering the password you shared with them, which restores the original file with its original name and type.

What happens if I lose the password?

The file can't be recovered. There's no backdoor or password reset, since nothing is stored on a server to reset.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Encryption happens entirely in your browser using the Web Crypto API. Nothing about your file is sent to a server.
